Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Clifton DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Clifton, New Jersey - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In August 2018, John Gonsalves of Clifton met his 40-year-old daughter for the first time at the age of 59. He first learned about her in June of that year. Born in 1977, Jeanie Siciliano was born to John's high school girlfriend. She was adopted two months later. When she was 19, she started looking for her biological parents, finding her birth mother but not her father. That's when she decided to take a DNA test. When she got her results, they showed that John was her biological father. John took his DNA test after receiving it from his daughter, Robin, as a birthday gift. Jeanie wrote her dad a letter, and the two connected, along with Robin.

Experts Say...

"Establishing legal paternity is required in order to collect child support in New Jersey," explains Leopold Law, L.L.C., a law firm serving Clifton, NJ. The firm explains why it's important to establish paternity. Paternity allows the child to be covered under the father's medical insurance, protects the child's right to benefits like social security or veterans' benefits, and allows the child access to inheritance from the father. "Establishing paternity can also be beneficial emotionally to a child," the firm says. "Many medical conditions are genetic, and it can be helpful for a child to know his or her father's medical history."

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Clifton, NJ

Unmarried parents in Clifton must establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. This can be done by signing a Certificate of Parentage acknowledging that the man is the child's father. However, if a man will not acknowledge that he's the father or denies paternity, DNA testing is used to determine whether he's the child's father. Either parent can request DNA testing if paternity is in question. DNA tests require samples from the mother, the alleged father, and the child. In Clifton, if a DNA test shows a 95% probability or higher that the child is his, he is presumed the child's father.
