Chattanooga TN DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Chattanooga, Tennessee locations:

The most commonly ordered DNA test is a Paternity Test to conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)

Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Chattanooga DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Chattanooga-Area Family Goes Viral After DNA Reunites Siblings

When Kila Carr took a DNA test in 2020, she never expected to find a half-sister who lived in Ooltewah, just a 20-minute drive from Chattanooga. At first, Dixie White ignored the message Carr sent her, but when she saw a second message that said, "Hey! I'm your sister," she couldn't help but respond. When she eventually answered, Carr learned that she had found not just one sibling, but five.

The family shared their story on TikTok and it quickly went viral. Before then, Carr says she had 77 followers and really just wanted to get to 100. Today, she has almost 250,000 followers, with people tuning in to learn more about DNA testing, hear about their reunion, and "feel like they belong."

Establishing Paternity in Tennessee

In the state of Tennessee, when a married couple gives birth to a child, paternity is established automatically. However, according to Chattanooga-based Ken Lawson Law, unmarried couples must take steps to establish legal paternity for their child. This can be done in two ways:

search
Voluntary - both parents sign and file a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity (VOP) form
search
Involuntary - a petition is filed with the courts to establish paternity

Signing a VOP allows the father's name to be added to the child's birth certificate and the child can also take the father's last name, if the parents choose. When a petition is filed with the courts, a DNA test will be required to prove biological paternity. If the test results come back positive, the courts will issue an order of parentage.

Handling Paternity Disputes in Chattanooga

According to paternity attorneys at the Chattanooga-based Law Offices of Fisher Wise, a child's mother or father, the child themselves, or the Tennessee Department of Human Services can file a petition to establish parentage up until the child reaches the age of 21. If a man believes he is not the father of a child or is unsure, he can petition the courts and request a DNA test. Doing so can help him avoid potentially being ordered to pay child support for another man's child.
