Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Jefferson County, WV

Much like many other cities and counties across the nation, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Charles Town and the rest of Jefferson County saw a significant uptick in substance abuse issues. According to a report from the Jefferson County Coroner’s office, there were 401 overdose deaths in the county in 2021, 302 in 2020, and 236 in 2019. This is a 70% increase over a two-year period. The average age for overdose deaths in the county is between 40 and 49. According to Dr. Darlene Traffanstedt, a medical director with the Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH), fentanyl is a major factor behind these numbers.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Jefferson County

After experiencing one of the worst years on record for drug overdoses, in 2021, 17 West Virginia Counites, including Jefferson County, participated in the largest day of free naloxone distribution in the state. Across participating counties, citizens had the ability to access naloxone booths on college campuses, in clinics, at churches, gas stations, supermarkets, and more. Each location was made possible by volunteers who completed specialized training to participate in the event. Another Save-a-Life Free Naloxone Day is scheduled for September 8, 2022. It is expected that these will continue each year for as long as there is a need.

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Jefferson County

In April of 2022, U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld announced that 16 individuals from West Virginia and Maryland were facing drug conspiracy charges related to trafficking large amounts of the new synthetic drug Eutylone, also known as “boot,” from Maryland to Jefferson and Berkeley Counties. Ihlenfeld said that this drug “poses a serious threat to public health” and prosecuting those arrested will “make the community safer, both through enforcement and education.”
