Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Bensalem DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Local DNA Testing for Bensalem, PA

Local DNA Stories

DNA testing led to long-lost family members finding each other after 60 years have passed. In 2020, Laurie Gandel Samuels from Bucks County put a family history together for her grandchildren. What was supposed to be a "craft project" turned into in-depth research as Samuels began discovering family members she didn't even know existed with help from DNA testing. DNA testing showed a strong match between Samuels and a German woman and her son. Samuels began communicating with the two of them.

Meanwhile, Samuels used her test results and information from known family members to track down family members on her father's side. She began a Facebook group for all of them to communicate and share stories. Samuels and the German woman found out how they were related. The woman's great-grandfather and Samuel's grandfather were brothers. Samuel was able to discover the history of her family and to meet the family she never had. As of April 2021, her Facebook group of family members was up to 14 people.

In Bensalem, PA, paternity must be established if a child is born to unmarried parents. Until paternity is established, the child will have no legal father. Paternity can be established voluntarily if both parents agree to sign an Acknowledgement of Paternity form. An alleged father should not sign the form if he's unsure he is the child's biological father. Instead, he should request DNA testing to prove paternity. DNA testing samples are collected with a cheek swab and show genetic matches and biological relationships between two people.
