Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Annapolis DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Annapolis, MD

If a child is born to an unmarried mother, paternity needs to be established. In Annapolis, MD, paternity may be established in two ways. If both parents agree about who the biological father is, they can choose to sign a voluntary Affidavit of Parentage. If there is any question from either parent about who the father is, DNA testing to prove paternity may be requested by either parent.

Another way to establish paternity in Annapolis, MD is through the court system. If the mother and alleged father are not in agreement about the child's biological father, the court can step in and establish paternity. DNA testing may be ordered by the court and samples will be taken from the mother, alleged father, and child.

If DNA testing shows greater than a 99 percent probability that the man is the father, they may enter a consent order to resolve paternity. Once paternity is established, orders for child support may be given.

Experts Say...

Family Law Attorney of Annapolis, MD, Dawn M. Green, explains why paternity should be established. For example, mothers cannot receive child support until paternity is established.

"Other benefits from the father may be available for the child if paternity is established," Green said. "These may include social security, VA benefits, life insurance, health insurance, and inheritance."

"The purpose of Maryland's paternity law is to protect the best interests of the child," she explains, "and to try to give children born of unmarried parents the same rights to support, care, and education as children born to parents who were married."
