Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Aberdeen DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

DNA Testing Used to Identify Decades-old Remains in Aberdeen

In early 2019, local Aberdeen authorities solved two 47-year-old cases with the help of DNA testing and the national DNA Doe Project. The DNA Doe Project helps police reexamine cold case files using new testing technology and sample comparison tools to turn up new evidence in old cases.

Officials submitted DNA from a still-unidentified body found off the Redwood Highway in 1971 to the database. After some vigorous research, authorities were able to link the DNA to her sister living in elsewhere in Washington state. The remains were from 16-year-old Anne Marie Lehman who had gone missing in the area in early 1971.

Legal Experts Help Aberdeen Residents with Custodial DNA Testing

Either the custodial or non-custodial parent can request a paternity test through the state when deciding visitation schedules or child support agreements. Aberdeen residents who would like help with custody or DNA testing can hire a specialized legal professional to guide them.

Local family law attorney and founder Ted Zelasko has said, "Family law was the most human area of the law." When setting up his practice, "He stressed to all of us that family law touches and affects people more than any other area of law because it is all about home, family, and children, and the issues that are at the very core of who we are as people."
