Drug Testing Trends in the Power Generation Industry

For industries like power generation, even one mistake can be dangerous. That's why regular drug testing is so important. In fact, data from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission showed that in just one year, over 1,143 people working in nuclear power plant jobs tested positive or refused to take a test.

In 2022, the NRC changed its drug testing rules to match HHS guidelines from 2008 and 2017. The update added new drugs to the test, like hydrocodone, oxycodone, and hydromorphone. The new rules lowered the amount needed to test positive for drugs like cocaine and amphetamines. Even if the changes cost more, a cost-benefit study found they could catch more drug use and help stop people from using drugs in the first place.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) regulates the collection and use of consumer information, including background checks. Employers must obtain written consent from candidates before conducting a background check and provide them with a copy of the report if any adverse action is taken based on its contents.

Whether required by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) or the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), employees like Nuclear Plant Generator Operators must pass strict background checks before getting unescorted access to secure areas.
