Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our West Palm Beach DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

West Palm Beach, Florida - DNA Testing

Importance of Determining Paternity in West Palm Beach, FL

In certain instances, a West Palm Beach parent may have uncertainty about their child's paternity, which creates an important need for DNA paternity testing. By using DNA testing services, a parent can correctly determine who a child's biological father is and be able to move forward with the paternity establishment process.

By establishing paternity, a biological father is declaring his legal role as a parent over the child and receives the right to seek custody, child support, and visitation. Furthermore, by establishing paternity, a child has more opportunities to now receive benefits from both parent parties, including health insurance, inheritance, social security, and military benefits.

How to Establish Paternity in West Palm Beach, FL

Following the use of DNA testing services to accurately determine a child's father, it's critical for West Palm Beach parents to quickly move forward with the paternity establishment process. In the state of Florida, two parents can voluntarily establish paternity by filing an Acknowledgment of Paternity at the hospital following a child's birth or through a Palm Beach County Vital Statistics office.

Bear in mind that when using an Acknowledgment of Paternity to establish paternity, DNA testing will not always be required during this legally binding process. In the event two parents establish paternity and later learn that the presumed father is actually not the biological father, both parents can face difficulties in court when seeking the removal of any child support obligations.

Assistance Establishing Paternity in West Palm Beach, FL

At times, a West Palm Beach parent may not agree to establish paternity due to paternity denial or general refusal. Failing to establish paternity will prevent the other parent from seeking child support services, creating significant concern for both parent and child. In such cases, a parent will need to file a petition to establish paternity through West Palm Beach Family Court to jumpstart the establishment process.

From here, a judge will issue a summons for the refusing parent party and request that they undergo DNA paternity testing. If the biological father is accurately determined, a West Palm Beach judge can then move forward with the establishment process as well as any child support or custody agreements if necessary.
