Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Waterbury DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Waterbury, Connecticut

In Connecticut, if parents are unmarried and agree about who the biological father is, they can sign the Acknowledgement of Paternity (AOP). After both of them sign, they must file it with the Paternity Registry at the Department of Public Health (DPH). However, if the AOP is completed in the hospital right after the baby is born, the staff can usually help parents send it to DPH.

There are cases when parents disagree about who the biological father is and must go to court. In Connecticut, it is common for the judge to ask the alleged father and child to take a DNA test to prove a child-father relationship. Once the tests come back from the laboratory, the judge will establish paternity. It is important to remember that the judge can also consider other factors when deciding legal paternity.

Waterbury, CT: Benefits of establishing paternity

If the parents are not married and the mother is going to raise the child by herself, it could be beneficial for her to establish paternity. She can get the father's financial support for the child, and there are other benefits the child can get if the paternity is established. Some of them can include, for example, health and life insurance, veterans benefits, disability benefits, and the right to inherit from the father. Additionally, knowing both parents can help the child's sense of identity and mental health. Plus, if paternity is established, the child can access medical records from both sides of the family, which can be beneficial in diagnosing and treating genetic diseases.

However, establishing paternity is not only beneficial for the mother and the child. Once paternity is established, the father can gain the same rights and responsibilities as the mother, which allows him to establish custody of the child or visitation hours if necessary. The father will often have an equal voice in decisions concerning the child's healthcare, religious upbringing, education, and other significant issues.

The result page was clear and to the point. I would have preferred some explanation for the different testing criteria for curiosities sake but that would not make the out come of the test any different. I called and requested a electronic copy of the results and after a few verification questions it was emailed to me within 10 minutes!
