Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Plainfield DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Plainfield

In Indiana, fathers are only legally presumed to be the parent of a child if the parents are married when the child is born, or the child is born no later than 300 days after the marriage ends. If this isn't the case, the parents need to sign a paternity affidavit at the hospital within 72 hours of birth. After 72 hours, the affidavit can be signed at the local health department. In Plainfield, the local health department is the Hendricks County Health Department located at 355 South Washington Street in Danville.

Legal DNA tests in Plainfield and other parts of Indiana must follow a "Chain of Custody" documentation process. The Child Support Bureau offers information about genetic testing and how it is admissible for legal purposes in the paternity process. The region IV-D Child Support Office that serves Plainfield is located at 147 West Main Street in Danville.

The law enabled adopted adults like Barbara Allen to locate their biological parents and siblings. Allen told WTHR reporter Scott Swan in 2018 "I was always different. I wasn't like the rest of the people in my family." She knew nothing about her biological parents, but thanks to Indiana's law allowing her access to her birth certificate, she located her birth mother and an older sibling.
