Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Norfolk DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

How to Establish Paternity in Nebraska

In the state of Nebraska, there are three ways to establish a child's legal paternity:

  1. When the child's mother is married at the time of birth, the husband is presumed to be the child's legal father.
  2. Both parents can sign and file a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form (VAP).
  3. Through a court order.

It's important to note that DNA testing alone does not establish legal paternity. When choosing to file a VAP, Norfolk residents can send the completed and notarized form to the state's Vital Records Management Department, located in Lincoln. After 60 days, the document becomes a legal finding.

Filing a Complaint for Paternity in Norfolk

In some cases, it may be necessary to petition the courts to establish a child's legal paternity. Generally, this must be done within four years of the child's birth, although some exceptions do apply. To initiate the process, an individual can file a Complaint for Paternity, Custody, Parenting Time, and Child Support with the clerk of the district court in the county where the child lives. For Norfolk residents, this is the Madison County District Court. Once filed, a Case for Paternity allows the courts to declare the child's legal paternity and issue orders for custody, child support, parenting time, and health insurance.

Reasons to Establish Legal Paternity

There are many benefits to establishing a child's legal paternity. Not only does this give the child the opportunity to know both parents, but the child can also have access to his or her full family medical history. Establishing paternity also gives a child access to Social Security and/or veterans' benefits based on either parent's record and the ability to receive an inheritance from the father. In addition, the child receives financial support from both parents, including healthcare coverage.

Norfolk residents needing assistance locating a child's parent, establishing paternity, or seeking child support can contact the Norfolk NE Child Support and Social Service Office via the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, located at 209 N. 5th Street Norfolk, NE 68701.
