On May 25, 2022, Rhode Island became the 19th state that legalized cannabis for adults. Dan Mckee signed the Rhode Island Cannabis Act to regulate, legalize, and tax marijuana. This new law legalizes possession of up to an ounce of cannabis. Adults can also cultivate up to three cannabis plants in a private residence.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Scott Slater and Sen. Josh Miller, created a timeline to establish a legal cannabis market overseen by a regulatory commission. Current medical cannabis establishments will be permitted, but new hybrid adult-use licenses will be available. These changes also include the elimination of fees for medical cannabis patients.

In 2012, Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee signed a law decriminalizing marijuana possession. Under previous Rhode Island marijuana compliance law, possessing up to one ounce of marijuana was considered a misdemeanor offense punishable by up to a $500 fine and a year in prison. Under current Rhode Island marijuana law, possessing up to one ounce of marijuana is legal.

Senator Josh Miller and Representative Scott Slated introduced a bill to legalize cannabis for adults in March 2022. The legislation was passed and signed in May 2022 by the General Assembly and Governor Dan McKee. This new legislation allows adults older than 21 to: possess or purchase up to one ounce of cannabis, to possess up to ten ounces of marijuana in their home, possess up to five grams of cannabis concentrate, transfer up to one ounce of cannabis to another person, and grow up to 3 mature marijuana plants at home. People in Rhode Island can also have up to three additional immature plants.
