Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Williamsburg DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Establishing Paternity in Williamsburg, Michigan

For Williamsburg residents, the state of Michigan has provided detailed information on how to establish paternity. When a child’s parents are married at the time he or she is born or when the mother became pregnant, the mother’s husband is automatically deemed to be the child’s legal father. No further action is required.

When a child is born to unmarried parents in Williamsburg, they can either complete a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity or go to family court to have a judge establish legal paternity. In most cases, the second option will require a DNA paternity test.

Child Support and Paternity

According to information provided by the Grand Traverse County government, both of a child’s parents are responsible for providing financial support. To ensure this happens, the county prosecutor’s office helps families establish paternity.

Once paternity is established, the courts will issue a child support order. The amount to be paid is calculated based on a specific formula. If a person has applied for social assistance, they’ll likely be required to go to court to establish paternity. In most cases, this will require a DNA paternity test. Note that an at-home DNA test or one from an unapproved lab won’t be accepted as evidence.

Revocation of Paternity

Whether a child’s paternity is presumed or established through an affidavit or court order, there are times when the legal father and biological father are not the same. In some cases, by mistake or fraud, the wrong person could be named a child’s legal father.

According to attorneys at Schmeltzer Law, which serves clients in Grand Traverse County and the surrounding area, the Michigan Revocation of Paternity Act (ROPA) allows legal paternity to be reversed in very specific circumstances. If the father can prove that the designation was made in error, he may be able to convince the courts to excuse him from the responsibilities of caring for the child. Under ROPA, a man must contest his paternity by whichever is later — the child’s third birthday or within one year the Affidavit of Paternity was signed. However, case law has allowed for reversals after this timeline.
