Westminster, CO: Drug abuse trends

The number of deaths from fentanyl in Colorado is rising. In 2017, at least 81 people did not survive an overdose involving fentanyl; this number increased to a staggering 912 fentanyl overdose deaths just four years later in 2021.

In total, there were 1,881 drug overdose deaths in 2021 in Colorado compared to the previous year of 1,477 drug overdose deaths. The highest growth was in fentanyl use, from 540 deaths to 912 deaths. However, overdose deaths involving methamphetamine and cocaine also increased. Heroin-related deaths slightly decreased during the same time.

Fentanyl has become a national issue, with more individuals dying daily from this potent opioid. It is often laced into other drugs and unsuspecting people overdose.

Westminster man was arrested after police found 20 pounds of suspected meth

The police arrested a man from Westminster, Colorado, after finding about twenty pounds of suspected methamphetamine. The man is facing charges as a special offender for distributing a controlled substance on or near school grounds and distributing a controlled substance in excess of 112 grams. Both are level-one drug felonies. He was held in the detention facility in Adams County.

Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Westminster, CO

In October 2019, a Westminster woman by the name of Kayla Pagano was sentenced to federal prison for distributing heroin and methamphetamine that resulted in the death of a local woman. According to case details, a woman by the initials E.N. purchased .20 grams of heroin and .20 grams of methamphetamine through a woman named Ariel Walker. Walker originally purchased the drugs from Pagano on May 31, 2018, at a Circle K gas station in Westminster.

After receiving the drugs from Walker, E.N. reportedly used the heroin and passed out. Later that day, E.N’s body was found in an alley in Denver where it was determined she died from a drug overdose. Pagano was sentenced to 77 months in prison for her original role in distributing these deadly drugs. U.S Attorney Jason Dunn stated, “I hope drug dealers are getting the message: When someone dies as a result of your conduct, you will be held accountable and you will do time in federal prison.”
