Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Warrenton DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Facts about DNA Testing in Warrenton VA

DNA Tests Used for Huge Family Reunion in Fauquier County

When Stephannie Addison of Bealeton and Leslee Addison of Warrenton began planning their family reunion, they expected a large turnout — about 75 people or so. However, when they expanded their reach through Facebook and eventually using an online DNA test, the event took on a life of its own. It eventually had over 400 RSVPs with family members coming from across Virginia and from at least 7 other states.

During the 2-day event, the scene was the same over and over — family members who not only had never met but who didn’t know each other existed, greeting one another with hugs and lots of pictures. The event closed with a ceremony where the family replaced rocks marking the graves of seven of the earliest Addison ancestors with temporary white wooden crosses. They also decided to begin a fundraiser to pay for headstones.

Establishing Paternity in Warrenton

When a child is born to a married couple in Warrenton, under Virginia law the mother’s husband is automatically presumed to be the child’s legal father. However, according to SRIS law group, which covers many courts in Virginia including Warrenton, establishing paternity is more complicated when a child is born to unmarried parents.

In this case, the mother is considered the sole legal guardian of the child unless the courts establish legal paternity. Without legal paternity, the father cannot pursue visitation or custody and the mother cannot receive a court order for child support. The easiest way to establish paternity is for both the mother and father to file a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity Form. Otherwise, either party can file a “Petition to Establish Paternity” in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court in the county where the child lives. For Warrenton residents, this is the Fauquier Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, located at 14 Main St, Warrenton, VA 20186.

Warrenton Hospital Recognized for Paternity Establishment Program Results

Virginia’s Paternity Establishment Program was created to support the belief that every child deserves to have a father in their life. It works in conjunction with the Virginia Division of Child Support Enforcement and Division of Social Services to provide education and training to birth registrars in the state’s birth hospitals, as well as to parents and other organizations throughout the state.

The objective of the program is to encourage parents to complete voluntary paternity acknowledgments before they leave the hospital. Of the more than 32,000 births to unmarried parents in Virginia in 2019, Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton had the highest paternity establishment rate, coming in at 84% versus the state average of 73.68%.
