Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Union, NJ

Beginning almost 17 years ago, the New Jersey Alliance to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Program is currently the largest network of community-based anti-substance abuse coalitions in the United States. The program distributes necessary substance abuse treatment and prevention resources to more than 530 municipalities, including the township of Union.

The program aims to work with local residents, schools, non-profit organizations, local government, and law enforcement officials to spread the importance of an anti-substance abuse community. Along with youth programs, workshops, and community lectures, Union holds annual events to help bring awareness to the issue. For instance, Pedal for Prevention is an annual event held in Union to promote healthy lifestyles and the education and awareness of substance abuse through a community bike ride.

Notable Events Related to Drug Abuse in Union City, NJ

In November 2014, a month-long investigation by the Union County Guns, Drugs, and Violent Crimes Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) resulted in the shutdown of two high-volume heroin mills. Law enforcement collected 5.5 kilograms or 4,300 bricks of heroin and arrested eight people. Totaling a whopping street value of $3 million, the Union County bust was the largest seen in the past decade and is considered to be a historic seizure.

Warrants were executed at two residential neighborhood locations in Union and Linden. Inside the homes, law enforcement discovered fully functioning heroin mills that were processing large amounts of raw heroin for street sale. According to the investigation, the mills not only supplied hefty amounts of narcotics to multiple New Jersey counties but also numerous out-of-state localities. A 2002 GMC Envoy was also seized in the bust, where officials discovered the vehicle came equipped with an electronically controlled hidden trap door located underneath the rear seat.
