Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Toledo DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Toledo, Ohio - DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in Toledo, Ohio

When a child is born to parents who are not married, the child does not have a legal father until paternity is established. A judge or other official in Toledo can establish paternity at a court hearing. Parents can also establish paternity via the local county Child Support Enforcement Unit, in which case the court hearing is unnecessary.

If parents decide to establish paternity by the court, DNA testing is usually required. Based on the DNA test results, the judge can determine the biological father, and he is added to the child's birth certificate.

Another option is signing the Acknowledgment of Paternity. Both parents can sign it when the child is born at the hospital. The parentage can be established until the child is 18, sometimes up to age 21.

DNA test reunites family in Toledo, Ohio

Greg Holly met his siblings and biological mother after 48 years apart. Sherry Meiring gave birth to Greg when she was only fifteen years old in 1969, and her parents sent her to a home for unwed mothers. Sherry held Greg in her arms after his birth and thought that she would never see him again. She knew that he was adopted by a couple living in Toledo, Ohio, but she would know nothing more about him for the next 48 years.

Greg was happy in his adoptive home, and they told him since he was a baby that his biological mother gave him up but that she loved him deeply. Unfortunately, Greg's adoptive dad died from a heart attack when he was only three years old. Shortly after, his adoptive mother decided to bring her son to spend Thanksgiving with her family in LA. She never returned to their home in Ohio.

In the meantime, Sherry married Greg's biological father and had three more children. She only told them ten years ago that they had another sibling. In 2017, Greg decided to take a DNA test in the hope of finding his biological family. Eventually, his little sister messaged him, and soon, he was also talking to his mother. Two months later, they finally met! Greg expressed that the reunion has positively changed his life.
