Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Syracuse DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Syracuse, New York – DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In 2016, Justin Gerace came home to Syracuse from California and gifted his parents, Jim and Jacki Gerace, a DNA test so they could learn how English, Irish, or Italian they were. The DNA test led to the discovery that Jacki’s half-sister the family never met was alive, living less than an hour away. These Syracuse siblings spent their lives 25 miles apart and never met. The half-sister, Cindy Eastman, now Cindy Shelmidine, knew she was adopted and had a happy life. But DNA testing brought the two sisters together again, and when asked how their mother would have felt about it, Gerace said, “She’d be really, really happy.”

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Syracuse, NY

If a married couple has a child, the husband is the child’s legal father. But if an unmarried couple in Syracuse has a child, they must establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. The father does not have rights to the child until paternity is established.

In Syracuse, paternity can be established if both parents agree to sign a voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity (AOP). The form can be completed at the hospital when the baby is born or after leaving the hospital and can be completed until the child reaches 21 years of age. If the parents do not agree to sign the form, they can establish paternity in court. If there is any question about the child’s biological father, whether establishing paternity in court or by signing an AOP, DNA testing can prove paternity. Once paternity is determined, paternity must be established for the child to have a legal father.

Experts Say…

“Creating emotional bonds with a child is a crucial component of any healthy father/child relationship,” said Syracuse family law attorney Lauren Haddad. “Any obstruction to the formation of these relationships can be heartbreaking. Conversely, fathers who fail to live up to the expressive components of fatherhood still have a legal obligation to the well-being of the child.”
