Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)

Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)

Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Sumter DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Information for Sumter SC

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Sumter

In South Carolina, the Child Support Service Division (CSSD) of the Department of Social Services (DSS) offers genetic testing for either of a child's parent. According to the CSSD, it takes about three to four weeks for results to be returned after the last "necessary party" is tested. Necessary parties include potential father, mother, and child.

The state requires a 95% genetic match to establish a "rebuttable presumption of paternity." The case will then be presented in Family Court. Sumter County's Family Court is located on North Harvin Street in Sumter. According to the Department of Social Services, genetic testing is for parents "that have not established paternity and are uncertain of the biological father."

According to South Carolina Fathers and Families, "50% of children born in South Carolina are born to unmarried parents."

Local DNA Stories

People who are searching for biological relatives as a result of adoption or other circumstances can use the South Carolina Adoption Reunion Registry. The registry has information from people who are searching for relatives born in the 1930s through 1990s. In South Carolina, adoptive parents, an adopted person who is age 21 or older, and birth parents and siblings can access non-identifying information, including health and medical histories of birth parents and the health and medical history of the adopted person.

Experts Say ...

Midlands Fatherhood Coalition is part of the South Carolina Center for Fathers & Families. Local resident Worjroh Donaldson enrolled in the coalition to strengthen his relationship with his 18-year-old daughter. Mr. Donaldson works full time and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 21. He received health support from the Coalition and reconnected with his daughter.

He had an important message for his daughter, because she has also been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. "First thing's first, take care of yourself," he said. "The most important thing is, take care of your health when you're young. What you do when you're young, if you get the privilege to live a long life, it's all going to come back to you, good or bad."
