Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Staten Island DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Staten Island, New York – DNA Testing

DNA Test Helps Staten Island Man Meet Son for the First Time

After taking a DNA test, 57-year-old Staten Island business owner Michael Gaggi received the surprise of his life when he discovered he had a 35-year-old adult son who was living in South Africa. Following their initial connection, the two spent six months calling, texting, and video chatting before finally meeting in person. While neither was sure what to expect, they soon discovered that they had many similarities, despite their lifetime separation. Michael’s son, Steve Becker, said, “I didn’t think we would be as similar as we actually are, like our mannerisms and even the way we talk.” The two enjoyed their time together and have planned to reconnect again in the future.

DNA Test Connects Man to Long Lost Family

When two-year-old Henry Wesley was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, developmental disabilities, and other issues, his mother knew she couldn’t care for him and surrendered custody to the State of New York. Growing up, the young man faced many challenges and lived in several institutions, including Willowbrook State School on Staten Island. Despite being unable to communicate verbally and living in terrible conditions throughout his childhood, Wesley met and married the love of his life, Jean, who inspired him to begin learning more about his family history.

Once he took a DNA test, matches came pouring in. After many months of research, Wesley located his mother’s cousin. Sadly, he learned that his mother had passed away, but his newfound family member was able to provide information and photographs of his mother, her siblings, and his maternal grandparents. From there, he began to research his father’s side of the family. Although Wesley’s father had also passed away, he was surprised to learn that he had approximately 20 other siblings and a large extended family. While this was certainly a lot to take in, Wesley says, “I am happy to have made these connections, and I look forward to meeting my family in person.”

Establishing Paternity in New York

According to Staten Island attorney Paul W. Matthews, there are three ways to establish paternity in New York State. The first is for a child to be born to married parents. In this case, the mother’s husband is presumed to be the child’s father. If the parents are not married when the child is born, but they agree about the child’s paternity, they can sign a voluntary acknowledgment of parentage.

The third option is to establish paternity via a court order, also called an order of filiation. In this case, the courts will typically require a DNA test to confirm the identity of the child’s biological father. Once paternity has been established, the courts can rule on other important matters, such as visitation and child support.
