Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Spokane Valley

In the 10 years between 2012 and 2021, there were approximately 470 drug overdose deaths in Spokane County. In the five-year timespan from 2017 to 2021, a significant number of these deaths were related to opioid use. The rate of overdose deaths related to opioid use in Spokane County is now on par with the state of Washington as a whole.

In 2019, there were 36 opioid overdose deaths in Spokane County. This increased to 47 in 2020 and then skyrocketed to 125 in 2021. By March 2022, there had already been 49 opioid-related overdose deaths, indicating that this may be the area's deadliest year yet. Hospitalizations from opioid overdoses have decreased significantly, from a peak of 184 in 2016 to 105 in 2019. This is an indication that in recent years, opioid overdoses have resulted in fatalities, rather than hospitalizations.

Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Spokane Valley

The Spokane Regional Opioid Task Force takes a multi-faceted approach to address fentanyl, heroin, and prescription pain pill addiction in the Spokane Valley region. The organization provides opioid education and prevention resources, treatment and recovery resources, and educational public service announcements to limit the negative effects of opioid use. It also hosts Operation Engage, a community alliance focused on bringing awareness to the area's growing fentanyl crisis.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Spokane Valley

In July 2022, an apparent fentanyl ring was busted by police in Spokane Valley. Between June 13th and October 2022, police received more than 780 calls about a local hotel studio and suite property. These calls resulted in 52 arrests. Crimes committed ranged from assaults on hotel staff and guests to domestic violence, trespassing, and possession of fentanyl with intent to sell.

After serving warrants on two rooms, the Spokane Valley SWAT team found fentanyl pills, methamphetamine, scales, packaging used for drug sales, drug sale ledgers, and more. Eight individuals were arrested and several others were detained. Hotel management is continuing to work with authorities to decrease levels of criminal activity at the hotel.
