State and Local Initiatives Relating to Substance Abuse in Saint Simons Island, GA

In January 2022, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced the state had signed on to the ongoing $26 billion multi-state agreement involving major pharmaceutical opioid distributors and manufacturers, including Johnson and Johnson. This action comes as part of a settlement from recent investigations that found the companies fueled the opioid epidemic by failing to properly monitor drug orders and providing misinformation regarding the addictive nature of opioids.

The multi-billion dollar settlement includes the company's lawful requirement to provide substantial funding for opioid treatment and prevention efforts across the country. The state of Georgia is expected to receive approximately $636 million under the agreement, which is planned to be distributed amongst state and local governments. With this funding, Georgia counties can more effectively develop and update substance abuse initiatives to help reduce abuse and deadly overdose rate.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Saint Simons Island, GA

In 2014, the state of Georgia passed House Bill 965 to create Georgia's 911 Medical Amnesty Law. Often referred to as a Good Samaritan law, the Georgia Medical Amnesty Law provides legal protection from drug possession charges for those seeking medical attention for either themselves or a family member or friend in the event of a drug overdose.

House Bill 965 also created a public health standing order to allow Naloxone to be distributed without a prescription. Naloxone is an opioid-antidote frequently used in the event of an emergency overdose to reverse deadly side effects. With these laws, Georgia officials hope to reduce spiking numbers of drug-overdose deaths and more effectively provide individuals with the resources they need.
