Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Saint Louis DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Saint Louis, Missouri – DNA Testing

DNA Test Reunites Mother with Child 49 Years After She Was Told She Was Dead

When Zella Jackson Price gave birth to a premature daughter in a St. Louis hospital 49 years ago, a nurse told her that her child had died. However, the child was alive and well. For reasons that remain unclear, she was put into foster care and adopted by another family when she turned 16. After taking a DNA test, Jackson Price was shocked to learn that there was a 99.9997% chance that she was the mother of an Oregon woman named Melanie Diane Gilmore (Jackson).

After speaking and confirming that the story was true, the two finally met in person for the first time in almost 50 years. When they did, they both “broke into tears and held each other tightly.”

How to Establish Paternity in St. Louis

According to family law attorneys at the St. Louis-based Rogers Sevastianos & Bante, LLP, paternity cases can be brought forward by either a child’s mother or father. If the person identified as the child’s biological father doesn’t agree, the courts may order him to take a DNA paternity test. If the test determines that the man is the child’s father, then the courts will:

Establish a legal relationship between the child and the father
looks_two
Order an updated birth certificate
looks_3
Set the child support amount

Visitation and custody are not automatically included in a paternity case. However, if either parent requests it, the courts can rule on this and issue a parenting plan. This document states which parent is responsible for the decision-making for the child and how disputes between the parents will be resolved.

Contesting Paternity in Missouri

In the state of Missouri, the ability to contest paternity depends, in part, on how much involvement a man has had in a child’s life. According to Father’s Rights attorneys at the St. Louis law firm John Buchmiller & Associates, if a man contests a woman’s claim that he has fathered a child, the courts can require a DNA test to settle the matter. However, when a man has already had an active role in a child’s life, things get more complicated. The courts are hesitant to leave children “fatherless,” even if the man who was raising them turns out to not be their biological father. In some cases, a man may be unable to legally renounce paternity, regardless of the DNA test results.
