Saint Charles, located in Missouri, has been facing the opioid crisis that affects much of the United States. In 2021, opioids accounted for a staggering 73 percent of all drug overdoses in Missouri. Drug overdoses, in general, have emerged as a significant concern throughout Missouri. In 2011, the substance overdose death rate in Missouri was at 16.4 per 100,000 residents. By 2021, this number had increased to 36.5 per 100,000 residents.

In the past, Saint Charles experienced the impact of heroin and prescription opioids, which were the primary drivers of overdose deaths. However, in 2021, a new threat emerged as fentanyl took the forefront as the leading cause of overdoses in the town and the state. The potent presence of fentanyl further exacerbates the risks associated with substance abuse, necessitating targeted efforts to address this pressing issue.

St. Charles man pleads guilty for drug distribution

In April 2021, a 26-year-old man from St. Charles, Missouri, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of drug possession. He had the intent to distribute heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. He and his co-defendant were primarily distributing substances in the St. Charles County area. The men were arrested after they sold narcotics to an undercover detective. The man confessed to possessing over six grams of heroin, more than four grams of fentanyl, and more than thirty grams of methamphetamine.
