Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Rochester, NH

In July 2023, a man was arrested after delivering 25 pounds of crystal methamphetamine to an undercover officer in Rochester, NH. The 23-year-old man allegedly trafficked tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of methamphetamine into New Hampshire, including the city of Rochester. After confiscating the drugs, officers field-tested and weighed them on the scene and sent them to the DEA for further testing. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the man took an Uber to traffic the drugs from Massachusetts to New Hampshire in exchange for $58,000. The drug bust led to the largest seizure of methamphetamine in New Hampshire’s history.

In 2022, the state of New Hampshire, including Rochester and Stafford County, lost 486 people to fatal overdoses, the highest number of overdose deaths since 2017. Of these deaths, 410 involved fentanyl alone or combined with other drugs, like methamphetamine. In 2023, increasing overdose deaths led to House Bill 287 decriminalizing harm reduction tools and allowing the public to possess fentanyl and xylazine test strips.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Rochester, NH

The New Hampshire Harm Reduction Coalition (NHHRC) provides weekly mobile harm reduction services in Rochester. The coalition offers syringe exchanges, fentanyl and xylazine test strips, Plan B, condoms, wound care supplies, general hygiene products, and other items. In addition, care coordinators offer one-on-one consultations and connect people to additional services. In 2022, the coalition’s programs reversed 1,459 overdoses and took back 500,000 used syringes, a return rate of about 87%.
