Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Ranson, WV

In March 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment of a heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl distribution operation taking place across Jefferson and Berkeley County. A total of 33 individuals were listed in the indictment, including seven suspects from the Ranson area. The investigation was funded by the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Program (OCDETF) in response to ongoing concerns about drugs and violence across the eastern panhandle.

According to reports, local, state, and federal law enforcement seized 891 grams of various controlled substances, multiple firearms and ammunition, and more than $33,000 in cash after numerous raids across West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. These raids led to the indictment of the 33 individuals, which law enforcement hopes will help control the dangerous activity taking place across the area.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Ranson, WV

In 2019, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) and the Office of Drug Control Policy partnered with West Virginia University to launch a program to help better address substance abuse on a local level across Jefferson and Berkeley County. These two localities were chosen for project participation due to their leading rates of drug overdose fatalities compared to the surrounding counties.

The project works to implement various activities and initiatives across the area to provide quality prevention, early intervention, treatment, overdose reversal, and family support resources to those in need. These approaches are made possible by engaging numerous community partners, including but not limited to medical professionals, law enforcement, behavioral health providers, and local schools.
