Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Pittsburgh DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – DNA Testing

Establishing Paternity in Pittsburgh, PA

According to Pennsylvania law, no additional steps must be taken to establish paternity when two Pittsburgh parents are married at the time of their child’s birth, as it is presumed the husband is the biological father. If the two Pittsburgh parents are unmarried, the state of Pennsylvania will require they legally establish paternity to grant the father legal paternal rights over his child.

To establish paternity in Pittsburgh, both parents can complete an Acknowledgement of Paternity (AOP) form at the hospital following a child’s birth or through a child support services location. This form legally declares the identity of the child’s biological father and must only be used if there is no question about the child’s paternity, or if DNA paternity testing has already determined the child’s biological father.

Navigating a Troublesome Paternity Establishment in Pittsburgh, PA

Not always will the paternity establishment process be as simple as filing a form for Pittsburgh parents. In certain instances, either parent may refuse to sign the AOP, leaving the other parent unable to seek the child’s support services. In these situations, a paternity petition will need to be filed in an Allegheny County Family Court.

By filing a paternity petition, a judge will have the power to issue a summons for the opposing parent and mandate they complete the steps to establish paternity. A DNA paternity test will often be requested to accurately determine the child’s paternity and avoid issues later on. Paternity will be established if the father is identified, allowing both parents to move forward with child custody and child support agreements.

Experts in Pittsburgh, PA Say…

In certain instances, a Pittsburgh couple may be quick to establish paternity without using DNA paternity testing to confirm the child’s paternity. In the event that a presumed Pittsburgh father discovers he is actually not a biological father, Pittsburgh Family Law Attorney Bethany Nataro states that a paternity acknowledgment must be canceled within 60 days of filing. After the 60 days have passed, an AOP can only be challenged in a court on the basis of fraud, duress, or material mistake.
