With a surge of opioid abuse and overdose deaths experienced across Maryland in recent years, Governor Larry Hogan signed an executive order in 2017 to establish the Maryland Opioid Operational Command Center. This center is now being used to better understand ongoing changes in the opioid crisis landscape and to implement community-based approaches to decrease substance abuse and overdose numbers across the state.
From the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to the Department of Juvenile Services, the Command Center features a team of over 10 government organizations that act upon numerous objectives. Some of these objectives include collecting and analyzing state and local data, the creation of opioid intervention teams, and the coordination of training programs for local officials to further help assist in the fight against opioid abuse.
