Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Norman DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Determining and Establishing Paternity in Norman, OK

When a child is born to unmarried Norman parents, only the mother will possess paternal rights over the child at the time of birth. The state of Oklahoma requires unmarried parents to establish paternity. However, before moving forward with the establishment process, it’s important to have full confidence in the child’s paternity to avoid later complications. DNA testing services can accurately identify the biological father for a stress-free paternity establishment.

Once the biological father of a child is confirmed, a Norman couple can then move forward with the paternity establishment process. Paternity can be established by completing an Acknowledgment of Paternity form at the hospital following the child’s birth or through a Cleveland County Vital Statistics Office. Once properly filed, the father will retain his legal parental rights over the child and can also have his details placed on the child’s birth certificate.

Disestablishing Paternity in Norman, OK

As we’ve mentioned, it’s very important to use DNA testing services to confirm a child’s biological father if there isn’t complete confidence in a child’s paternity. Unfortunately, many parents can be quick to establish legal paternity without confirming the child’s biological lineage. This can be very troublesome later on, when the previously presumed father seeks to remove the paternity establishment and any accompanying child support obligations.

Under Oklahoma paternity law, a Norman resident can sign a rescission of acknowledgment of paternity up to 60 days after the form was filed. Highlighting the importance of DNA paternity testing, once the 60-day mark has passed, an acknowledgment can only be challenged on the basis of duress, fraud, or material mistake within two years of the acknowledgment filing.

Experts in Norman, OK Say…

Once paternity has been established, Norman parents can seek further legal assistance to establish a custody agreement. According to the Norman family law attorney Evan Taylor, when establishing custody, Oklahoma state law does not identify as a mom or dad state. Instead, custody agreements are decided on the basis of numerous factors regarding both parents, such as each parent’s relationship with the child and their current living situations.
