Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Newark DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Newark, New Jersey - DNA testing

Establishing paternity in Newark, New Jersey

The process of establishing paternity in Newark is relatively straightforward. If the parents are not married during pregnancy or after the child is born, they can sign a Certificate of Parentage with the birth certificate coordinator at the hospital. If both parents fill it out and sign it at the hospital after the child is born, it is free of charge.

If you do not know who the biological father is or the mother and father disagree, do not sign the Certificate of Parentage. Instead, paternity can be established in court. The court will usually order a DNA test and establish the legal father based on the results.

Seven siblings reconnected after decades due to a DNA test

Yale got one unexpected call from a woman named Lucy, who claimed to be his sister. He never knew that he had a sister, yet Lucy went on to tell him that she took a DNA test with her sister and discovered 11 relatives, from which there were another five half-siblings. Yale is one of them.

He was born in 1949 and adopted after just nine days. He grew up in Newark. His mother grew up in a rigorous catholic family in New York. She was kicked out of her house and sent to the home for "wayward girls." Over many years, she traveled to Newark to secretly give birth and arrange underground adoptions.

When the sisters took the DNA tests, they only wanted to find more information about their medical history and where their family originated. Finding more siblings was an unexpected twist!

The newfound siblings planned to meet and finally reconnect after so many years of not knowing they existed. It was a surreal and emotional experience, and they said they just felt so naturally comfortable around each other although they had never met before.
