In April 2022, the Lawrence County Drug and Alcohol Commission launched the NaloxBox Initiative to help enhance naloxone accessibility across New Castle and the surrounding county area. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist medication used in emergency situations to treat opioid overdose and reverse its deadly side effects.
Since the initiative's launch, the commission has installed over 55 boxes across Lawrence County in locations such as businesses, schools, colleges, and churches. Inside each NaloxBox, users can find overdose response tools such as various forms of naloxone, including nasal spray or injectable Narcan. In August 2022, the Western District of Pennsylvania U.S. Attorney's Office announced the sentencing of a New Castle man for his leading role in a local large-scale cocaine distribution ring. According to reports, an investigation involving intercepted communications led law enforcement to the discovery of a cocaine distribution operation that incorporated the transport of drugs from California to New Castle using the United States Mail Service.
The investigation came as part of an ongoing Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) effort to identify and dismantle high-level drug traffickers across the nation. The New Castle man was arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute over five kilograms of cocaine; he was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release.
