Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Monroe, LA

Across the city of Monroe, Ouachita Parish, and the surrounding state of Louisiana, the ongoing effects of the opioid epidemic have resulted in thousands of resident deaths and medical emergency events. In an effort to curb the ongoing spike in fatal drug overdoses, the Louisiana Department of Health created the Louisiana Opioid Response Plan in 2019.

The Louisiana Opioid Response Plan was built on five core pillars—surveillance, intervention, prevention, treatment, and recovery. Using these various focuses, Louisiana state officials have introduced new response efforts and upgrades to local addiction treatment programs, including enhanced prescription monitoring and reporting efforts and increased adolescent education efforts.

Each pillar of the plan has a dedicated chapter that outlines individual response efforts and the accompanying state legislation that can be used by local officials to more actively move forward and reach specific goals. By meeting various response goals, the state of Louisiana hopes to significantly reduce its drug overdose rate and more effectively preserve the lives of its residents.

Local Efforts to Curb Substance Abuse in Monroe, LA

In an effort to curb prescription medicine abuse rates, adolescent accessibility, and waterway pollution, local officials have recently introduced a drug drop box program. Thanks to state partnerships, including Blue Cross-Blue Shield, the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators, and Monroe law enforcement, drop boxes have now been placed in law enforcement offices throughout Monroe for residents to safely dispose of their unwanted medications.

The boxes are emptied once a week by law enforcement officials and contents properly disposed of by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration.
