Miami Beach, Florida – Drug Testing

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Miami Beach

While much of the rest of the country deals with combatting the increasing use of heroin and fentanyl, law enforcement in Miami Beach is seeing spikes in a different drug — crystal meth. While the Miami area is seeing an uptick in the use of this cheap and dangerous drug, police are doing their best to curb its distribution.

In 2021, the DEA Miami Field Division busted an alleged stash house near Collins Ave. in Miami Beach, apprehending a significant amount of drugs and arresting four people who were suspected of having connections to a South Florida drug ring with ties to the Mexican cartel. According to Special Agent in Charge Keith Weis, there has been a recent increase in Mexican-sourced methamphetamine coming into the U.S. via Florida. He stated that the division is “…real keen on getting to the sources of meth.”

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Miami Beach

The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County recently announced the launch of a program that offers free Naloxone (Narcan) Nasal Spray kits upon request. This life-saving drug can be used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Miami Beach residents can pick up kits by visiting the DOH-Miami-Dade County offices at 1350 NW 14th Street or 18255 Homestead Avenue.

The North Miami Beach Police Department has also established a secure 24/7 prescription pill dropbox, where residents can safely dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs. The box is located at 16901 NE 19 Avenue, inside the station’s lobby,

Life and People in Miami Beach

Drug use in Miami Beach’s entertainment district is on the rise and Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez wants it to stop. He was recently quoted as saying, “We acknowledge that there’s a problem. We have a challenge with drugs,” and indicated that the city is “flooding our police department with resources” so they can proactively bust drug dealers.

Local business owners are also frustrated. According to Miami Beach hotel owner Mitch Novick, substances being sold on the streets include “weed, coke, sugar cube, [and] jack fruit.” And, he says, “it’s embarrassing.” In August 2022, a drug bust occurred near his hotel in the heart of the entertainment district broad daylight, leading to the apprehension of two adult suspects and a minor.
