Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Mesa DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Mesa, AZ – DNA Testing

Experts Say…

The Arizona Law Group, which serves Mesa, Arizona and surrounding areas, explains DNA testing for paternity purposes. According to the law group, acknowledging paternity must be voluntary, and before signing the document to establish paternity, both parties must receive notice of legal consequences and alternatives for signing the document. “By acknowledging paternity, both father and mother have equal constitutional parental rights and equal obligations to support their child,” the law group explains, “The parties may also ‘agree to be bound by the results of a DNA paternity test. The laboratory analyzing the genetic samples must be certified. Should the DNA test affirm paternity by at least a 95% probability, the laboratory’s affidavit is usually sufficient to establish legal paternity.” The group continued to explain that once paternity has been established, the court will issue a paternity order.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Mesa, AZ

If the parents are married when a child is born, paternity doesn’t need to be established, and the husband is the child’s legal father. However, if a child is born to unmarried parents in Mesa, AZ, paternity must be established for the child to have a legal father. Before establishing paternity, a putative father should request DNA testing to ensure his biological relationship with the child. Once the DNA test determines paternity, paternity can be established voluntarily by both parties or through the court system. DNA testing is critical for determining paternity and allows for proper child care if the father has any inheritable medical conditions.

Local DNA Stories

In June of 2022, a Maricopa County woman, Whitney Thompson, found her biological father through DNA testing. After 33 years, Thompson could introduce herself to her birth father after not knowing who he was since 1988. Her mother also didn’t know the man’s identity. The only thing Whitney knew came from her mom’s journal entry in 1988 about a “man named Chuck from Michigan.” She knew she wanted to find her father and took a DNA test. Thanks to DNA testing, the father and daughter could find each other and reunite.
