Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Long Beach DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Long Beach, California - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In 2018 in Los Angeles County, a lost family found each other using DNA testing, and brothers and sisters reunited.

Jeff Adams of Marble Estates in Torrance, located just miles from Long Beach, CA, was raised by his biological mother and a man he believed to be his biological father, although he'd always questioned the true relationship with his father. Adams and his brother used DNA testing and discovered they didn't have the same father.

Five years later, Julie Rogan of San Pedro was doing research to confirm she had a family member who signed the Declaration of Independence and used DNA testing in her research. Months later, she found a match, and the picture looked just like her father. Within minutes, she heard back from Jeff Adams, who found two close matches with his DNA test.

Adams learned he not only had one sister but had two, including another woman from Torrance, CA, named Beth Sossaman. Meanwhile, San Diego resident Brandon Blaylock used DNA testing, knowing he was adopted and was also matched with Adams. DNA testing led to the four siblings being reunited.
