In 2021, the Connecticut Legislature enacted Public Act 21-108 to create new opioid overdose response training requirements for local law enforcement. Under this new law, all law enforcement officers are now required to be trained in using opioid antagonists, such as Narcan. In the event an officer encounters an individual in the midst of an opioid overdose, these opioid antagonists can be used to immediately treat and reverse the deadly side effects.

Under Public Act 21-108, police departments across the state will also be required to acquire and maintain an ongoing supply of these opioid antagonists to ensure officers have constant accessibility to emergency medication. With spiking numbers of overdoses being seen across the state in recent years, officials hope that increasing police accessibility to these resources can help prompt more effective and quicker emergency responses.
