Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Portsmouth DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Portsmouth, Virginia – DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in Portsmouth, VA

Unmarried Portsmouth parents must establish paternity for the father to be legally recognized as the child’s father. In Portsmouth, Virginia, paternity can be established voluntarily by signing an Acknowledgement of Paternity (AOP) form or going to court.

If parents are in agreement about the identity of the biological father, then they can sign the AOP at the hospital after the baby is born, but it must be in front of the notary. Hospital staff can usually assist with this process and help parents file the form. If the AOP is signed at a later date, the parents will have to file the form themselves. Once the AOP is filed with the Office of Vital Records, the father’s name can be added to the child’s birth certificate, and he will become the legal father.

Parents who disagree about paternity may choose to have paternity established through the court instead. The judge will usually order a DNA test to prove whether the alleged father is the biological father. The DNA test is usually done as a cheek swab, so it is quick and painless. When the DNA test results have been returned to the court, the judge may consider this evidence in the paternity decision.

DNA test reunited sisters after decades

Joyce (85) thought she was an only child for eight decades. Lorraine (75) suspected she had a half-sister somewhere but had no idea how she could find her. The sisters finally reconnected after they took a DNA test! About 40 relatives from around the country flew in to meet up in Lexington park, and all had to wear name tags.

Their story began when Joyce’s parents had her and quickly divorced shortly after. Joyce grew up as an only child in Brooklyn and was told her father was dead. Meanwhile, her father, Walter, met his second wife, moved to Virginia, and had more kids. Her mother also remarried, but she never let Joyce’s stepdad adopt her, and now she understands why. Her birth dad was not dead, as she thought. Lorraine knew she had a half-sister, but she only found out after her dad passed away. Both sisters lived their lives, and only recently, they decided to take DNA tests which reconnected them. After the meeting in the park, they planned more visits and wanted to spend as much time together as possible.
