Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Lynchburg, VA

In 2023, a former Lynchburg resident was sentenced to 27.5 years in federal prison for conspiring (with others) to distribute narcotics in Lynchburg and the greater Lynchburg area. In July 2022, the man pled guilty to conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine and possession with the intent to distribute and distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, among other charges. He distributed over 150 kilograms of cocaine around the Lynchburg area, which holds a value of $4.5 million.

In 2019, a 12-month investigation led to the arrest of 28 Lynchburg residents on about 100 firearm and drug charges. “Operation Ice Melt” led authorities to the seizure of over 3,139 grams of methamphetamine, 54 grams of cocaine, 212 grams of heroin, 251 MDMA tablets, 75 doses of morphine, and 10 doses of PCP/Acid.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Lynchburg, VA

The Lynchburg Police Department (LPD) began using Narcan for overdoses in 2019. Narcan, also known by its generic name naloxone, is a drug used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Narcan has been effective at saving lives in Lynchburg. From January 1 through September 1, 2022, LPD administered Narcan 54 times and had 51 positive outcomes.
