In April 2022, the Lakewood Police Department participated in National Drug Take-Back Day in partnership with Jefferson County and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). This nationwide initiative works with local police departments across the country to host a day and location where residents can safely dispose of any unwanted prescription drugs.
This year, the local Lakewood Police Department acted as the drop-off location for National Drug Take-Back Day. Through this initiative, local officials were able to collect and safely destroy unwanted prescription medicines. This process helps prevent prescription medication from ending up in the wrong hands and protects the local water supply from contamination caused by flushed or tossed medications.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Lakewood, CO
In May 2022, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed HB22-1326 to help introduce a wide variety of preventive efforts that target the spiking concern of fentanyl overdose experienced across Lakewood and the surrounding Colorado state. The new bill aims to provide increased funding for preventive measures, including $29 million for harm-reduction tools like Narcan, and $7 million for law enforcement to better investigate fentanyl cases.
Furthermore, under HB22-1326, current jail drug treatment programs will be expanded to allow law enforcement to more frequently funnel drug-based offenders into jail-based treatment programs.
