Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Kalamazoo DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Kalamazoo, Michigan – DNA Testing

Michigan Bill Addresses Fertility Fraud

A legal bill, which has been backed by many representatives including Kalamazoo Democrat Julie Rogers, aims to criminalize fertility fraud. The bill will make it a criminal act for egg and sperm donors to falsify their biographical information and for fertility doctors to secretly use their own sperm to help patients conceive.

Jamie Hall, an individual who testified to the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services regarding the bill, shared her own story of discovering her paternity after taking a DNA test along with her sister. It revealed that her biological father was actually her mother’s fertility doctor, who was thought to have fathered hundreds of offspring using his own sperm to help his patients conceive.

Michigan currently has no regulations regarding fertility fraud, other than for cases involving monetary fraud. If the legislation passes, those found guilty could be subject to a $50,000 fine, up to a five-year prison sentence, or both.

Establishing Paternity in Kalamazoo

In the state of Michigan, when a child is born to parents who are not married, steps must be taken to establish legal paternity. According to attorneys at the Kalamazoo-based Stancati, Hencken & Greenlee, parents can establish legal paternity by signing and filing a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form, also known as an Affidavit of Parentage. While this form acknowledges the man as the child’s legal father and makes him responsible for providing for the child, it does not grant any visitation or custody rights. Instead, an unwed father who wants parenting time with his child must file a petition in court.

Additionally, if both parties do not agree to sign an Affidavit of Parentage, it’s typically necessary to go to court to establish legal paternity. When there is a conflict over the identity of the child’s biological father, the courts will typically order a DNA paternity test before issuing a ruling.

Important Things to Know Before Signing an Affidavit of Paternity

While an Affidavit of Paternity may be an easy way to establish a child’s legal paternity, it’s not something to be taken lightly. Attorneys at the Kalamazoo-based Arnson Vantol Law firm warn that by signing the affidavit, a man waives his rights to request a DNA paternity test or to have the courts determine whether he is actually the child’s biological father. For this reason, a man should seek legal advice before signing an Affidavit of Paternity, particularly if he is not 100% sure he is the child’s biological father.
