In August of 2020, a K-9 unit helped police uncover over $100,000 in suspected drug money following a traffic stop. The suspects were taken into custody on felony money laundering charges and placed in the Walker County Jail.

In September of 2020, the Walker County Grand Jury indicted 25 people on drug-related charges. Most of these indictments were for possession of methamphetamine. Indictments in addition to possession of controlled substances included manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance, DWI, unlawful possession of a firearm, tampering with physical evidence, and evading arrest. Several of those indicted are residents of Huntsville, TX.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Huntsville, TX, and Walker County

In 2005, the Walker County Sheriff’s office introduced a Narcotics Division to address narcotics in the Walker County area. This includes the consumption, distribution, and manufacturing of illegal narcotics.

The narcotics division works with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in trafficking illegal narcotics.

Since adding this division, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office has been able to make more narcotics-related arrests each year than it did when the division didn’t exist.

Opioids are also becoming a growing problem in Huntsville and the rest of Texas. According to Lt. Jim Barnes of the Huntsville Police Department, “People have always abused prescription drugs, but the opiates and stuff like that were not anywhere near as prevalent when I started,” Barnes said. “When I was on the streets, crack cocaine, marijuana and those types of drugs were the big things we were dealing with.”

Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, began a website, DoseofReality.Texas.gov, to provide patients and healthcare providers opioid-related recourses.
