Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Hot Springs National Park, AR

In February 2020, the Arkansas 18th Judicial District East Drug Task Force announced the successful arrest of 65 individuals for their roles in multiple Hot Springs and Garland County drug trafficking operations. In a nine-month investigation titled “Operation Who’s Next”, the local drug task force and supporting law enforcement agencies utilized undercover agents who purchased methamphetamine from various individuals in the organizations.

Law enforcement was eventually led to one of the organization’s leaders, Lessie Galo of Hot Springs, where it was discovered she was transporting and distributing large amounts of meth throughout the Garland County area. It was suspected that Galo had ties with drug cartel members in Mexico and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Further into the investigation, law enforcement also discovered a second and third meth trafficking organization operating under Laurie Lee Hooks and John Rickey Stringer of Hot Springs with similar ties to Mexican drug cartels. These leaders and their supporting associates were arrested and booked on various felony narcotic sales and distribution charges.

Programs to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Hot Springs National Park, AR

With the rate of prescription drug abuse remaining high in the Hot Springs National Park and surrounding Garland County areas, local law enforcement created the Operation Medicine Cabinet initiative. Overseen by the Garland County Sheriff’s Department, Operation Medicine Cabinet is a medication disposal program used to properly dispose of unused prescriptions.

Through this effort, local officials hope to reduce the rate of accidental drug poisonings, which affect both adults and adolescents who gain access to unwanted medications within the home. Likewise, the initiative aims to reduce the risk of local water supply pollution through the proper disposal of prescription medications, since these medications aren’t flushed or simply thrown in the trash.
