Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our High Point DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

High Point, North Carolina - DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in High Point, NC

In North Carolina, parents have two options for establishing paternity if they are unwed. If they know the biological father's identity and there are no disagreements, they can sign the Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity (VAP). They can do so at the hospital after the child's birth, and the hospital staff can usually help them. However, the father must be present and provide all the necessary information and documents. Once both parents sign the VAP, they must file it with Vital Records, and their names will be added to the child's birth certificate.

Sometimes, the mother is unsure about who the birth father is, or the alleged father disagrees with her about paternity. In that case, they may have to go to court. Generally, the judge will ask the alleged father and the child to undergo a DNA test, usually done as a cheek swab, to prove if they are related. The DNA specimens are delivered to the laboratory, and once the DNA results come back, the judge can decide whether to establish paternity.

High Point, North Carolina: Benefits of establishing paternity

If the parents are unwed, they should consider establishing paternity as it can benefit the parents and the child. By establishing paternity, the father can gain the same rights and responsibilities as the mother and participate in making important decisions about the child. He can also ask the court for custody or visitation hours if necessary.

The child can benefit from having both parents on their birth certificate in multiple ways, such as:

High Point Man Ordered to Pay Child Support for a Child That Wasn't His

High Point resident Billy Mason was only 15 years old when he was brought before a judge in Guilford County and asked if he was the father of his pregnant girlfriend's child. Not knowing the implications of his answer, he said yes. He was ordered to pay child support, which he did for many years.

Eventually, though, Mason began to suspect that the child might not have been his. A DNA test revealed that he was not the child's father and a judge ordered that he could stop paying child support. Then things took a strange turn. The county attorney appealed the ruling and a higher court reinstated the child support. The justification was that, by statute, you have one year to deny paternity and too much time had passed. When asked for comment, both a judge and county attorney confirmed that the courts establish "paternity," not "biology." Once paternity has been established, it's very difficult to disestablish it. This is one of the many reasons to consult with an attorney before getting involved in any type of paternity issues.
