Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Hampton DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Hampton, Virginia – DNA Testing

Properly Establishing Paternity in Hampton, VA

A set of Hampton parents will need to establish paternity in the state of Virginia if they are not married at the time of their child’s birth. Doing so allows the couple to legally identify and establish the bond between the biological father and child. However, to properly establish this bond in the state of Virginia, it’s crucial that both parents have full confidence in the child’s paternity.

If there is any doubt in a child’s biological father, it’s important for Hampton parents to seek DNA testing services. If the father is accurately identified through DNA testing, parents can safely move forward with paternity establishment by completing a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity. This form can be completed at the hospital following a child’s birth or at a later date through Hampton Family Court.

Why is Establishing Paternity So Important in Hampton, VA?

In addition to providing a Hampton father with his parental rights and placing his details on the child’s birth certificate, establishing paternity in the state of Virginia also benefits the mother and child. For example, the legal establishment of paternity is required for the mother to seek monthly child support services from the father.

Furthermore, by establishing paternity properly, the child can receive benefits from both parent parties. Parental benefits often include but are not limited to social security, military benefits, inheritance opportunities, and health insurance coverage.

Navigating Paternity Disestablishment in Hampton, VA

When two uncertain parents fail to conduct DNA paternity testing prior to the establishment of paternity, they can find themselves facing legal struggles when later attempting to remove an establishment in Hampton Family Court. Such struggles can include a previously presumed father remaining locked into child support obligations for a child who is not his biological offspring.

In the event that two parents need to disestablish paternity, the state of Virginia allows Hampton parents to file a petition to remove the establishment within 60 days of its filing. Following this 60-day mark, a Hampton parent will need to provide proof of duress, fraud, or material mistake for the agreement to be challenged in court.
