Greeley, Colorado: Drug abuse trends

Colorado reported a 54 percent increase in fatal opioid overdoses in 2020, which means opioids were present in two out of three deadly overdoses. One of the most significant problems is fentanyl. From 2019 to 2020, fentanyl-related drug overdoses doubled. In Colorado, fentanyl-related overdoses have increased tenfold since 2016. Some experts believe the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced this sharp spike in fentanyl use in recent years.

Colorado ended 2020 with at least 1,477 fatal drug overdoses—the highest ever recorded in the state. The numbers increased almost by 40 percent compared to 2019. Like much of the state, Weld County has also experienced rising overdose deaths over recent years.

Police seized $50,000 worth of cocaine during a traffic stop

Greeley police had been investigating a man suspected of cocaine distribution, leading to two men's arrest. Authorities searched their vehicle during a traffic stop and discovered three pounds of cocaine and a handgun.

Police obtained a search warrant for the home, where they discovered another large quantity of cocaine. In total, an estimated $50,000 of cocaine was removed from the streets by the Greeley Police SWAT team. Both suspects were taken into custody and booked in the Weld County Jail.
