Laws Relating to Substance Abuse in Gallup, NM
In April 2019, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 323 in a push to decriminalize marijuana. Under the new bill, Gallup residents found in the possession of a half-ounce or less of marijuana no longer face potential jail time and will receive a $50 fine instead. Likewise, the bill reduced penalties for the possession of drug paraphernalia.
Although marijuana is still not recreationally legal in the state of New Mexico, it is legal for medical purposes. While government officials are still pushing for full medical and recreational legalization, the bill is a step in a new direction as it aims to help courts, prosecutors, and public defenders reduce unnecessary workloads and unfair jail sentences for drug charges.
Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Gallup, NM
On July 17, 2019, New Mexico State police completed a massive drug bust at the Gallup Port of Entry on I-40 just west of Gallup city. After being stopped for a vehicle inspection, law enforcement discovered a strong odor of marijuana coming from the truck of Leo Brown Jr. Upon inspection, officials discovered a box with an "Exotic High THC" sticker on it, along with four duffel bags that were sealed shut.
In the bags, officers found 269 pounds of cocaine, 147 pounds of fentanyl, roughly 21 pounds of heroin, 35 pounds of raw marijuana, 192 packs of THC marijuana concentrates, and 88 packs of THC marijuana candy. The New Mexico street value of the combined items was said to be an estimated $63 million.
