Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Gainesville, VA

Back in 2016, detectives discovered that multiple suspects were buying large amounts of Xanax from an online black market website. In part of a joint investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), 26 Gainesville and surrounding Prince William County residents were arrested for their roles in a massive narcotics distribution ring.

An investigation titled “Operation Breaking Bars” discovered that many of these pills were counterfeit and were being resold across Prince William County. Detectives also discovered that Gainesville doctor Craig Krause was prescribing Xanax to multiple suspects, even after acknowledging that these patients were selling the drugs. After an execution of 15 search warrants and 26 arrests, law enforcement located computers, marijuana, narcotics paraphernalia, and guns used in the illegal operation.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Gainesville, VA

The Prevention Alliance of Greater Prince William was founded in 1996 by local residents and professionals aiming to bring attention to substance abuse prevention and the promotion of positive mental health. Members work collaboratively to promote these goals using measurable and research-based methods that help improve the overall quality of life of residents and prevent long-term substance abuse.

The Alliance uses 12 drug-free community sectors recognized by the Office of National Drug Control Policy to implement their various efforts. Some of these sectors include parents, schools, religious organizations, and healthcare professionals. One of their leading programs is the Youth Leadership Council, in which local students can apply to receive in-depth training on topics including strategic prevention framework and environmental approaches to prevention.
