Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Fort Lauderdale DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in Fort Lauderdale, FL

If the father and the mother are not married when the child is born, they can sign a Paternity Acknowledgment form in the hospital. Both parents must sign this form in the presence of a notary public. The man who signs this form becomes a legal father once the form is complete. His name will be on the birth certificate.

Parents in Florida who are married at the time of their child’s birth usually do not need to take additional steps to establish paternity. Unless the court has ordered otherwise, the husband’s name will automatically be placed on the child’s birth certificate.

When either party is unsure of the biological father, or if either party does not cooperate, the court can also establish paternity. The judge will likely order a DNA test and then establish paternity based on the DNA test results.

DNA test reunites four Florida siblings

Four siblings, ages 102, 93, 88, and 84, met in Florida after years of not knowing they even existed. They all have the same father. When their father divorced his first wife, he changed his name and started a new chapter with a new family, never revealing that he already had one family.

Years later, they all discovered each other after taking DNA tests. A couple of them lived only ten miles from each other and even went to the same synagogue. One brother, Ralph, expressed how surprising it was to discover he had siblings at this age. Ralph admitted it felt unreal to find out he had a sister who is 102 and a brother who is 93, but they are happy they connected.
