Major Cocaine Bust in Fajardo
In June of 2021, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) successfully completed a major drug bust in Fajardo. After inspecting a vessel, they discovered 516 bricks concealed inside hidden compartments. They then seized 1,299 pounds of cocaine, estimated to be worth $17.6 million.
According to John Kanig, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Caribbean Division, a collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement has been putting forth "a nonstop effort" to disrupt drug trafficking organizations in the area. He went on to say that doing so helps make the local communities safer.
Puerto Rico Law Protects Medical Cannabis Users
In July of 2021, Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi signed the Medicinal Cannabis Act into law. This legal amendment extends protections for employees who are licensed and registered medical marijuana patients. It says that they cannot be discriminated against regarding "recruitment, hiring, termination, or other employment conditions" due to their medical marijuana patient status. It also states that "no contract, license, permit, or benefit under the laws of Puerto Rico" can be penalized or denied solely based on the employer employing medical cannabis patients.
