Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Fairfax DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Virginia Paternity Law for Fairfax, Virginia Residents

Virginia law states that for a court to order child support, custody or visitation rights, paternity must be established. Fairfax-based law office, Cooper, Ginsberg and Gray (CGG), outlines the various methods that can be used to establish paternity. This includes reliable DNA testing from a reputable company like Health Street, which proves a 99 percent chance of paternity (the court requires 98 percent or greater).

There may be a case where a man believes he is the father of a child, but he and the mother are not married. As CGG states, "In cases such as this, the father may register with the putative father registry." This registration must be received "(i) before the child is born; (ii) within 10 calendar days after the child is born; (iii) within 10 days from personal service or by certified mailing of notice from the child placing agency or adoptive parent of an adoptive plan for a child; or (iv) within 10 days upon the discovery of fraud by the mother." In such cases, DNA testing is the only reliable method of proving paternity that is admissible in court.
